Yes, it is hackneyed in regards to how it affects a character’s personal development.

They can’t be held responsible, and as such cannot grow from it.

And one’s will doesn’t do jack shit on its own. It’s actions that matter. And that’s one of the reasons the whole active/passive dichotomy is dumb.

I could see it being useful to develop OTHER characters. Granted, that’s not going to actually HAPPEN in Homestuck, because Homestuck Act Six is terrible.

Like what sort of characters?
I’m pretty sure it’s none of them because mind control still absolves them from responsibility, and character growth generally starts with taking responsibility.
Mind control generally just leads to people angsting despite them literally zero choice in the matter.

I meant “other than the ones being mind controlled”. Like, to use this example. If Jade being mind controlled helped to facilitate Karkat’s character development.

Eh, I guess that’s a possibility.
To be honest, in Karkat’s case, I can’t think of much that wouldn’t be a reprise of the Gamzee shituation, and doing the same development twice over is just lame.
And not enough other characters have that much of a connection to Jade, so I don’t see much possibility for them either.
Also, Karkat already got plenty of development in Act 6. Does he really need any more?

I think Hussie choosing to have Jade get mind controlled probably has to do with showing the Empress’s cunning and power… and the fact Jade is one of the more competent and mature characters in Homestuck and thus can not be active in preparation for this “night is darkest before the dawn” he’s dead set upon doing. Things like Rose being a drunkard and Jade and Jane being mind controlled act sort of like “competency” limiters. I predict he’ll use this to make some of our other protagonists not so lame, but he’s taken up so much time already failing to convince that many of the heroes left active have what it takes to defeat the villain without some bullshit from nowhere or deus ex machina, so I barely care about what happens to most of the main characters, even if I used to really enjoy them in the past..
